A pleasure to find. I only saw this because it was in the 1001 FYMSBYD book, but was delighted I had.
Trying to make my way through that book has given me some .. disapointing.. afternoons, but has also revealed some magnificent treasures I would not have tried otherwise. (Les Vampires, Woman of the dunes being but two of the most outstanding ones). So list ticking can be restrictiv, and if taken to excess not good, but it also opens your horizons at times.

I know what ya mean.. I have the amended/edited book... 101 Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die... And while I like most of the films the book recommends, I find it puzzling what some might people consider "horror" movies, and it's also amusing what was once thought of as "scary" is now considered passe.
This film, however... Delivered the goods. It thoroughly kicked ass. There was nothing old hat or corny about Viy.

I saw it yesterday. Sadly, i must say i was not very impressed. I don't think it was scary and not much Horror content.

This film and Black Sunday aka Mask of Satan (1960) is based on the same story, but this film is much more true to original story. Regardless, i think Black Sunday is much better than this film.

Yeah, that's how I found it too---in the 101 horror films book. Other than NIGHT WATCH and DAY WATCH, I didn't know of any Russian horror films, period. Like some other people on the board said, it was a really nice surprise--loved the surrealistic special effects, and the climax with the demons in the church was genuinely creepy and dramatic---they did look creepy as heck. On top of that, it was really lively and fun to watch, too. The witch was cool, too, and the actor playing the priest was very good. Would love to snap this one up on a DVD,definitely.
