It was the beginnings of Mass Media. Television, Radio, Magazines and yes, even Newspapers. There were OVERNIGHT sensations but it wasn't as easy as it was portrayed in the film.

Probably a Broadway play (like Streisand). Yet they didn't seem to age anyone in the entire film, as if everything occurred in a 5 yr period

She did porn.

Although the film makes it seem like Neely and Anne became famous overnight, it was really over the span of a few years. I think the book spanned 10-20 years. Neely was in a hit play and became a sensation and went on to more hits. She also apparently released an album because she won a Grammy.

The time span wasn't dealt with well in the film, but was implied. When Lyon meets Anne again in a restaurant, he mentions he wrote a (presumably boring) book in Europe while Anne was morphing into the Gillian Girl. That had to have taken at least a year from inception to publishing.

The film telescopes a lot of the novel, which I think takes place from 1945-1965. The timeline in the film is muddled. I assume a considerable amount of time has passed between Neely becoming a star and her breakdown.

She isn't completely obscure at the beginning of the film; she is the ingenue in a Broadway musical back when they really were big deals. Her boyfriend is a press agent. Finally, Lyon gets her on a coast-to-coast telethon hosted by a star, reminiscent of the Jerry Lewis MD Telethon which used to take over one of the (five) broadcast channels for the entire Labor Day weekend.

Just like anyone who becomes a star, she f'ked the right people.
