Upsetting to see

I saw this film at the Radio City Music Hall (of all places). At the time, I was studying to become a NYC teacher. The film was so realistic and well-done that I left the Music Hall in shambles. I considered going into a different profession. I stuck it out and wound up teaching for 32 years. I recently saw the film and it's spooky just how real the film is about teaching. It shows a lack of supplies, lack of help for students in danger, no help for abused kids, alcoholic teachers, ridiculous afterschool conferences which are a waste of time, teachers getting "punched-in" at the timeclock, lack of interest by parents, emphasis on Regents' exams for graduation, as well as dangers to teachers in bad neighborhoods. This film was too real and scared me. To all those planning to teach in an inner-city school, this should be a warning that this film will test your fortitude as shown at the ending.

Well, it's 50 years later and . . . . America still tolerates a government monopoly on their children's brains. Yep, we've learned a lot in a half century.
