Poe story confusion..? ( spoilers)

Perhaps someone could explain what seems to be a plot hole..?

Arn't the stories about showing those people "what might happen" if they don't heed the warning, which gives them the chance to change things and not become one of the Diablo/Devil "customers."?

if so....

In the Poe story, Wyatt steals a cigarette lighter from Canning, then after we see what happens in the story, Wyatt seems to know who Diablo really is..( possibly due to what Poe says about the person who frees him having to trade places).

At the end of the movie Wyatt lights Dr Diablo's cigarette using that same cigarette lighter. So does that mean Wyatts story has already happened because he's had the lighter all the time( which he could not have if the story had not yet occured ) ?, and that's why he laughs because he knows,he's already done it and is dammed and wants to do a deal?.

Also the old guy at the end,Is he actually working with Diablo?, as he says " i have to get ready for the next performance", or is he one of the "customers" who has made a deal..?

I would think that, yes, the Wyatt story is the only one that has already occurred (note that he is the only person who seems unperturbed and almost fatalistically amused by the proceedings -- he knows he is beyond mere warnings of things that "may" occur). This contingency is covered by the earlier existential discourse about the past, present and future all being different aspects of the same moment -- how warnings and memories can be much the same thing.

As to the other issue, I assume the old fellow who pretends to stab Diabolo at the end is merely an innocent carnie employed with the show. The only persons who know the proprietor's true identity are Wyatt (because, as you say, he has already entered into indenture as the Devil's servant), and, of course, we the audience, at the final reveal.

Thanks
It's quite a good movie isn't it ( for it's time) i wonder why there are not more comments. Perhaps not many people have actually seen it..
