I saw someone mentioned the use of US halftracks to stand in for German ones, but I have seen many photos where both the axis and the allies used ea others equip whenever it was nessacery or expiedient. So the use of US halftracks in this situation seems very reasonable. As to the point that movies of this era depend on 1950s US tanks, well the only way to get around that is to remake the movie with CGI. The cost of using real German tanks from that era would have been rediculously expensive assuming anyone could actually find any. They did the best with what they had and it was done effectivly. Speaking of CGI, Enemy at the Gate had a brief shot of the German Mk3 driving through the town, only time i ever saw THAT vechicle in a movie anywhere

The two German Mark IIIS which appeared in 'Enemy at the Gates' were replicas created using Swiss Panzer 61s. One of these vehicles later appeared in 'Defiance'. 'Tobruk' was set in September 1942 at which point no American M3 halftracks had been deployed to N Africa. They would have arrived in November 1942 with 'Operation Torch.' The British did use M3 halftracks later in the war but not in N Africa in 1942 so the Germans wouldn't have any captured American halftracks in September 1942.
