What was burning....and WHY?

This probably sounds stupid, but what were the gurls burning on the furnace that made Thackeray so angry...and WHY?

reply

Read the thread "Help", which goes into it a bit. In short, they were burning a sanitary napkin (and he thus asked the boys to leave).

a Maxie pad most likely, because he got mad and said it was disgusting and that girls shouldnt behave in that manner or something.

I'm pretty sure it was a used tampon (sanitary napkin)thus the stench.

As other people have pointed out it was a sanitary towel that the girls were attempting to burn. In the book, the item was clearly visible and the girls hadn't managed to burn it properly (as I remember it the grate or fireplace was open). I reckon you can guess why Thackeray was so angry!
