Is Denham the UK version of Artie West?

I can't help comparing this to blackboard Jungle but of course much more tame. Both take place in schools where troubled kids were sent. The music of 1955 played a big part in that film like the music of 1966/67 does in this film. but this one is co-ed.

Denham is more like Gregory Miller in Blackboard Jungle (coincidentally played by Poitier in an early role), the rebellious student who develops respect for the teacher.
