Why cant they make Mental hospitals look better?

I was watching this film and notice the whole building was depressing and not fit for an animal, if they want the insane to be sane maybe try a different approach. no wonder they go nuts.

You have to consider the time this film was made. Now I think ethical standards have been raised. I hope.

These are some movies of mine. Enjoy!

One rather blunt and unpleasant way of looking at the issue is simply "cost". How many dollars would it take to build a better place, and how many votes would the legislators who voted for it gain?

Pushing the simple "cost" criteria to the edge, one might even imagine that instead of assuming those in charge "want the insane to be sane" they ask "which would be cheaper - to house this person for the rest of their life, or to pay for sufficient treatment to allow them to rejoin society?"

Perhaps overly cynical (at least I hope so:-) ...nevertheless a POV worth considering.

Background: I worked at a rehab center for outpatient psychiatric patients. Mental Health consumers. NAMI term. *
National Alliance for the mentally ill. Major mental health organization mostly of family members and consumers. The other side of the coin is releasing people from hospitals too soon and even worse with no support. IE psychiatrist, therapist, social worker etc. Of course it isn't right to keep someone in longer than they need to be. OTOH being discharged before one is ready is wrong too. In many cases one is inpatient as long as one's insurance, usually HMO lasts regardless of the actual need of the patient.

As Mr and Mrs Potato Head says as far as I'm concerned you;re all just common
tators!!!
