Uneven but worth a watch.

The humor of this movie is extremely absurd, which often doesn't work and I found myself wondering if it might have been better if it were more subtle. But then there are times when it's hilarious as well. Lots of interesting ideas in play here - I loved the two commuters planning to swap wives, the kidnapping itself, and the scene on the train is priceless. Eli Wallach is fantastic, and it was interesting to see Dustin Hoffman in a bit part. It does feel patched together though and when it ends it's unceremoniously and without any real sense of closure. What it does succeed in is painting a feverish presentation of the nuttiness of city living in modern times. The characters and relationships feel undeveloped to their potential, but I guess it's not a bad thing to leave viewers wanting more.
