Trying to identify a painting in Darvas' apartment

At the beginning of the film, in the room where Darvas celebrates the opening of his theatre, there is a large painting of a Madonna and Child above the fire-place. The style is very flat and strange.

I'm not an art historian, but I'm sure I've seen this image elsewhere and that it's vaguely famous.

Can anyone name the painting and artist?

Many thanks.

(on an unrelated note, did anyone else notice the stills from The Magic Roundabout on the dressing room wall in Darvas' theatre?) I'm not sure when this film is set, but it looked strange.

Do you mean the Georges de la Tour? There was another painting, but the de la Tour was shown several times. Here is a link:

I am watching the film right now and - I am not the OP but the painting you identified is definitely the one in Darvas's flat.

Well spotted! I am impressed.

It had to be 1966 when the film was shot due to the vehicles, female hairstyles and so on.
