subtitles anywhere?

I've got a very bad copy. With the help of subtitles I could understand the film much better. German, English or Spanish.

No captions/subtitles on mine, either. The audio was not clear enough. Sounded like it might have been in mono (-old film)?

P.S.

The ending sucked.

The whole audio issue is discussed thoroughly already, here:

P.S. The ending did NOT suck. Just because it's not your typical "hero rides off into the sunset" western ending doesn't mean it's bad. It's a MESSAGE. This is an existentialist movie first, in a western setting, second. The reason people tend to think the ending sucks is because it simply went over their heads, and they just don't understand it.

I'm so tired of reading from posters that those who don't share their opinion obviously "don't understand the movie." This is the dullest western -- and maybe the dullest movie -- I have ever seen.

I have to agree, one of my guilty/I should be embarrassed to admit doing it-pleasures is watching movies with the English/SDH subtitles so I don't miss any dialogue, names, etc, but here it was ESSENTIAL, the dialogue/recording was so garbled that I couldn't tell what was being said. Really, Millie Perkins was the only character who I could actually understand half of the time. It was like Hellman failed to mic the actors properly, I dunno. However, considering that the DVD I saw was an out-of-print version, that means that either they're hoping to phase out this crappy, inaudible subtitle-less version in favor of a copy with, or, just phase it out and noone else will get to see the film to judge if it's worthy of a wider release. Shame.

I just used closed captions to watch and even many of the captions read "inaudible"
