Racist Hollywood actually had an Asian character of some substance
This has to be one of the few times in racist Hollywood that there was actuallly an Asian character of some substance in a mainstream film.

That's substance abuse.
Next to Liz's beauty and Robert Foster's ass, he was the best part of the movie!
And his relationship with the Julie Harris character was so sweet!
Professional Jayne Mansfield fanatic/loverâ„¢ since 1980.
And hooray, he's a queeny little eunuch. That's really something to applaud. Save your clapping for when a non-white person gets to be a figure of some authority and sexual power. Hollywood is still making all white movies.
shareI can't remember the movie, it was either in the 40s or 50s but the briefly showed a scene with with an Asian American dealing with an ignorant woman. She saw him eyes popping out like he was an alien. He just laughed it up and answered her dumb questions one of them were "Do you speak English."
share"Racist" Hollywood did not score highly with this Asian character. Brando on a talk show condemned a movie that had a "leering Filipino houseboy" and I didn't know if Brando was referring to one of the characters he himself once played ... but after seeing RIAGE, I wonder if he meant the one in this movie. The character was unctuous, grotesque, creepy, obsequious and ... it would seem that his voice was dubbed by a Westerner pretending to be not Filipino, but rather Indian. A very obtrusive character and no improvement over the other stereotypes. Also the character was consistently used for "comic relief" - another cliche.

The Letter had a good Asian portrayal, albeit kind of nefarious in the paralegal.
Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...share
Obviously Mickey Rooney was not available to play a camp far eastern.
Its that man again!!
Of course, every single old movie has to be held to modern politically correct standards of today. What, the Hollywood people who made this movie should appear out of their graves, jump in a time machine and rework all their movies to fit with modern, group thought? I've noticed on almost all older movies, there has to be at least one obnoxious, asinine jerk who has to call the movie they are commenting on "racist." Frankly, I'm sick of hearing & reading about it. Everyone has become so freaking sensitive.
