The design of the ship is way ahead of its time. It looks like it was made of fibreglass. and I would have thought it took a long while to make the molds from which the ship was made. Because it was so expensive, I wonder what happen'd to the original ship prop, it would have been a shame just to have it cut up after the film was shot. Does anyone out there know what happen'd to it.?
shareI watched this movie several times and recently on a large screen. The ship prop is very impressive and has an unearthly metallic sheen to it. I think you may be right that it was made from fiberglass. It also appears very solid when the actors touch it and get inside of it.
It would be great if any other fans of the movie might enlighten us on the construction of the martian ship used in the film.
It was probably easy and cheap especially if they had someone in the prop dept with boat building experience.
In fact the most daunting expense would have been storing the thing for years.
