This seemed like the movie they were trying to make...

I remember as a youngster in the eighties staying up late watching weird movies that would come on at 2 PM, often bizarre comedies from the sixties that were trying to be more witty, more satirical than they really were, I knew that even at the time that they were mired in the trendiness of another period, and often just surreal for surrealness' sake - they could still be rather fascinating to watch, but mostly as curiosities. But this film seems like the one those movies were trying to be, it is witty and satirical, and strangely prescient and timeless. Goes to show not all the espionage comedies of the sixties had to just be campy (though I like a lot of those too). This one is special, it's brilliant.
