Who did the animation?

Does anyone know who made the animated film-within-film in the "Cerebrum Communicator" scene? The style looks awfully familiar - like those Bell Telephone science movies (presumably no coincidence!)

reply

The company that did the animation was DePatie-Freleng (according to the opening credits). They were one of the major American animation firms in the '60s after the movie studio units petered out - in fact, the two principals were from Warner Brothers. Besides the 'Pink Panther' cartoon series, they actually made cartoons for W-B (poor, watered-down versions of the earlier greats) and very probably a lot of institutional films much like the C.C. presentation.

Thanks! Now that you mention it, they are listed under "Company Credits."

I have had that same thought before. I loved those Bell Telephone movies when I was a kid. BTW, a lot of them are now available on DVD.

reply

dePatie-Freleng, who, indeed, did the animation for the actual BellTel Specials.

reply

The animators were likely involved with the 1964-65 World's Fair as that was where (as a kid) I recall seeing similar animation at either the Bell Telephone or IBM pavilians.

reply

If I remember correctly, the material at the IBM pavilion was put together by Charles and Ray Eames, a husband/wife team who practically created the mid-century modern look.
