New Criterion release in 2006!

Decided to make a new topic, now that we have confirmation.

From the Criterion newsletter:

"...we are happy to report that we are indeed planning to release a new edition of Playtime—either individually or as part of a Jacques Tati box set—sometime in 2006. Watch the Criterion website for details."

Oh I hope individually. I just bought Mon Oncle! I would hate to have to buy a set with that in it to get Playtime (even though I probably would)

reply

i've heard roumors that this will be tati's original 155 minute version, can anyone confirm?

reply

Not much to add, other than I'm anxious to get the new DVD. I was ignorant of it's existenceuntil recently, having loved Vacances and Mon Oncle for years. I ordered Playtime from BFI last month, without even considering the Region issue. Needless to say I wasn't expecting to have to view it on my laptop monitor. I loved it though, and can't wait for the re-release. I can't imagine the film losing money. What a crime! Oh well...

reply

Hmm... I personally think that this is a film that might be more suited to one of the newer formats with a higher resolution - HDDVD or Bluray. I haven't seen it myself, but most of the reviews on this site imply that it's difficult to enjoy it on the small screen, and I guess that a higher resolution would help.

I always assumed that was why Criterion was holding off on releasing this film - that they were waiting for the new formats to come out. Still, this is very interesting news, although I think that I myself might hold out until the Bluray/HDDVD versions of Tati's films are released before buying the set.

Any news whether this possible box set will also include 'Trafic'?

I am an American, and yes, I am crazy.

reply

The rumours I read somewhere or other said that the box-set would include Playtime, Traffic, and Jour De Fete.

If it's true, I hope the slipcase also includes space for Mon Oncle and M. Hulot's Holiday.

reply

Oh my God, if that's true you just made my day.

Ooh, just finished watching the film this morning, and that is great news.

I was considering buying this local boxset from The AV Channel (almost like the Aussie Criterion in many ways), but I might wait and see what Criterion does.

Maybe someone ought to go over to Russia and check. There are a lot of films sitting in vaults in Russia, but the people controlling them aren't very communicative from what I heard.

I read a story about a director who wanted to get a better copy of her own film made in 1990 (since hers was worn out) and went to Gosteleradiofond. There, some "not very polite" ladies told her that she'd need to pay 2000 rubles (77 USD) for them to copy it onto videocassete, with no guarantee of quality. As for a digital version, they would only do it for television companies and at a far higher price.
(here's the story told in Russian: http://animator.ru/index.phtml?p=forum_messages&f=3&m=3280)

In any case, I imagine that many film archives around the world have some obscure, mislabelled and forgotten stuff among their collections.

As much as I love this film, I think I'll wait a while yet. This is one film that I really WOULD like to see on Blu-ray.

I can't wait to finally see this. I heard Hugh Hefner is really charming in it and most of the 1967 playmates go topless!

Um, their site gives the details: new cut (longest available?) newly restored print, new extras. Not a box with PARADE, TRAFFIC, etc.

Got it today, too. I didn't think anyone had captured footage of Tati throwing the script as they toppled the building.

reply

I think the colors are badly manipulated, too much blue, compared with other editions. I watched the restored version in a theatre and the buildings tended to look grey, perhaps with a slight greenish tinge: there were no dominant blue tones as in this new release. Apart from that, the image of the new DVD is wonderful: very sharp and detailed.
