But...my Criterion copy IS longer then 120 minutes!!

Ok, am I missing something? I'm reading these posts claiming that the Criterion version of "Playtime" ( Criterion #112 ) is only 120 minutes long. Mine does indeed *say* on the cover that it is 120 minutes, but it in fact clocks in at 159.09 minutes.

hmmm. i haven't seen the criterion collection version myself, but just saw the 35mm release. are you sure your dvd player isn't telling you that it's 1hour, 59mins, 9seconds and not in fact 159mins? just a thought.

reply

Alright, sorry. I guess I can sometimes be a retard when it comes to numbers. What I "was missing" was that 60 minutes + 59 minutes, 9 seconds is of course roughly 120 minutes. *sigh*

So, I'm to understand there is actually 39 minutes more of this? Outrageous! Well ok, what's the story on a new Criterion edition with that extra time included? The thread that brought this up seemed to be started in early 2004. A quick glance on Criterion's site doesn't mention it in upcoming releases.

It's been due for sometime now. It's not officially announced though so it would be August at the earliest, but who really knows. Great movie.

The 155-minute workprint version no longer exists. The 'restored' version is Tati's 126-minutes cut - the original French release. Print of the 120-minute cut were more common before 2002, so that's why the Criterion runs at that length.

I read somewhere that the only full length (155 min.) copy that exists is in a museum vault in Moscow, Russia. The Russians have not been interested in loaning it out for copying, for some reason.

my Criterion DVD case says 124 minutes, and the movie is slightly longer than that counting the time spent with music over a black screen at the end

Is it still in print?

Elaine: What you do? You don't do anything!

the Criterion Playtime is out of print, though I've heard a rumor that it will be re-released

there's a Tati blu-ray box set, which includes Playtime on Amazon's UK site
