What was Hulot trying to do with the broken nose guy?

He's waiting for him, looking for him, gets lost, finds him that night while walking his dog and then goes to the restaurant. Is it unimportant or did I miss what the deal was?

The guy was Hulot's potential new employer whom he was trying to get a job with, but they kept missing each other the whole time Hulot's in the building. That's what all those gags in that same building were about.
