Mother's perfectly manicured nails

I did enjoy the movie but it needed more attention from the script editor and others. There are many unexplained parts to this script – for example the older children must have seen their mother pregnant. Where did they think these babies came from? To me though the first image we get of the mother with her perfectly manicured nails and the close-up of them as she presses the buzzer is jarring and incongruous. (I’m not sure who takes care of making sure “the look” is correct and fitting to the scene, but I would think that would be under the director’s jurisdiction.)

In Michelle Magorian's book "Goodnight Mr Tom" who also features a deeply religious mother, she tells William her son when she is pregnant that the baby is sent from God. She denounces relationships between men and women, which I think this Mother may have also done when the daughter is called a harlot by her brother for kissing the motorist.

So, I'm guessing that the children were taught similar. Mother was probably in very deep turmoil over her actions that and probably in major denial, because she would needed to have had a relationship with a man to become pregnant which would have contrasted with the possible stance of sex = evil.

Mother would no doubt have been a very strange woman to live and probably very volatile and unforgiving.
