I just watched it and think it was awful. I really cannot understand the high rating of 7.3 stars in the imdb.
Alain Delon's remake from 1978 (Attention, the Kids are watching/Attention, les enfants regardent) was much better.
I collect Dirk Bogarde movies, but this was his worst role IMHO.

Nah, you're crazy. It was creepy and sad. The kids were all decent actors, which is sort of rare. Bogarde's acting was fairly unspectacular but he is pretty much playing a one-dimensional character, just a drunk conman. That's what the story called for. The plot was a little predictable toward the end, but still very good.
