camp at its most eloquent

this film is quite bad on many levels, but cannot be discarded as comic crapola, either. robert morse was never more impishly obnoxious. rosalind russell was never more overbearing. barbara harris was never more sumptuous. hugh griffith was never more bristly.

you can certainly feel the heft of jonathan winters in almost every scene he make some stupid, uncalled-for comment in. what a cheap gimmick. arthur kopit must have been furious when he saw what director r. quine did to his absurdist play. it does feature quite a cute little carribean-flavored score by odd couple/batman composer neal hefti.

i noticed robin williams doing inside the actors studio with the esteemed, brilliant, overrated james lipton the other day and he was quoting commodore roseabove's great pick up line about being like salmon swimming upstream and spawning. that was ecstacy! has anyone (and i mean the 50 of us that have seen it) noticed that the four main characters of this film have a "rose" in their name? i recommend this film to anyone who takes their comedy black. very twisted.
