what can you say about the beauty of the movie?

any feedbacks as to the aESTHETIC part of the movie?

can it be considered among the top movies of japan all time?

how were the performance of the actors?

i have not seen the movie but from the writeups, i can safely say that this is worth a blind buy....................................................

another mifunesque performance from toshiro?.....

the greatest actor, asia has ever produced....no offense meant to jackie chan and his fans, like me but the great jackie chan is a superstar/comedian, not an actor/superstar like mifune...................................

Tatsuya Nakadai is the narrator, so he is there in spirt.
A wonderful film, telling a painful story in an honest, blameless way. It's newsreel style is effective and engaging, and all the performances are excellent.

But is there anyone who's really good? Maybe goodness is just make-believe.

I agree with this, loved the style in which this was filmed and told.

I agree with the previous reviewer.

This is not an "art movie" but more a "docudrama". I enjoyed it very much.

It struck me that if the military coup would have succeeded, the war would have gone on with millions of more dead because, unbeknownst to the Japanese, the United States had already exploded its two atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To make more atom bombs would have taken many months so an allied invasion of Japan would probably have begun in September of 1945. How different the world might have been. Would the US and USSR have fought over occupation of Japan? Probably so. It's a good thing that rational thinking prevailed finally in the Japanese government.

To the OP, belatedly ... As I got into the film I was amazed at the editing and mix of camera angles. For a long movie, it had a crisp pacing that moved the fim along quite well.
