What do other people think of this movie?

I found this third part in Hammer's mummy series to be rather uneven. I felt the first half of the film was below Hammer's standards as far as details in the plot were concerned. Some of the plot elements seemed somewhat silly. The second half of the film was much better, and I'm not just saying this because the action picks up in the second half. I know what to expect from Hammer.

I can't remember everything that made me feel somewhat negative toward the first half of the movie, but I did feel the narration went on much too long. Also, the we-just-happened-to-pitch-camp-right-near-the-tomb plot element seemed silly.

Obviously my somewhat negative feeling toward the first half of the movie has to do with the writing, and not the acting, directing, etc.

Semi-majestic and at some times muddled, but this is far from being the worst Hammer gave the world. The way the mummy tears itself asunder still excites me. I remember when I first saw this in the drive-in a thousand years ago, I was very impressed with that denouement. The pic this was shown with "Frankenstein Created Woman" is nowhere as good as this one, even if the mummy itself seems to have a zipper down its back. I couldn't see that in the theater and so good memories are all I have to this day.

Believe those who are seeking the truth; doubt those who find it.

It was o.k. It did seem lacking in some ways and rather flat, but I still enjoyed watching it, though I doubt I'd ever watch it again.

It honestly seemed like they'd lost heart and were simply running on formula by this point.

"Okay, we've had the mummified priest and the mummified prince. What are we going to do for our next picture?"
"How about a mummified slave?"
"Sure, that'll work."

Honestly though, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb wasn't the greatest production either. A silent mummy stalked those who disturbed its tomb, then drowned as the first one had - only in a less climactic fashion. At least this picture gave us a more entertaining mummy death. Truth be told, Hammer would have been better off leaving The Mummy as a stand-alone and pursuing other ventures.

I saw this movie when I was in Jr. High ... yeah I'm that old so what ... I liked it then and I like it now ... it's the first mummy movie where the scientist had enough sense not the say the words ... and why can't anyone use this thing without being put to death ... what good is it or why have it if you can't use it. I notice that about these words of life and death in those mummy movies. What's the point if you are not allowed to use it?

You probably don't remember but the head guy said when they were waiting out the storm in the tent that he believe they were right by the tomb according to his calculations. So it just proved he was right.

spirit 30,

I'm glad you pointed that out, because I somehow missed that.

No problem ... I remembered your comment while I was watching the movie and heard him say they should be right next to the tomb while waiting out the storm. Thought I would mention it. Another thing about the movie I liked is Clare ... unlike in other mummy pictures she had enough sense not the read the scared words that brought the mummy to life.

Really wished they had done a descent commentary on the film ... but alas.

spirit 30,

Good point about the Claire character. I did like that character.

One of the great pleasures afforded by many Hammer productions is that they can be-rewatched at intervals of several years and enjoyed all over again. Although I remember when this film was originally released, I didn't catch up with it until I picked up a VHS tape about four years ago.

I decided to pop it in for a re-watch, and as I recall very little of that first viewing, I'm having a good time with it this time around - I don't find it as bad as its reputation would have it - I do wish they hadn't dispatched Andre Morrell so early in the proceedings, or, even better, hadn't killed him off at all - he's an actor I always enjoy watching.

"In my case, self-absorption is completely justified."

I thought the film was very hammy and very silly. Having said all that, I really enjoyed it! The mummy was just awesome!!

"Hey! Ladies! That was fun!"

Very enjoyable rubbish.
