What the... A Visible Microphone?

I was surprised to see this...

At 1:13:16 into the Criterion Collection DVD, when the shot changes to Yogoro (played by Gô Katô) just as he begins to verbally caution the lord and his retainers (after having delivered the petition), there is a microphone bobbing up and down about 10 inches above Gô's head, just on the edge of the frame! Then, in the same shot, as Gô is rising to his feet, the mic can be seen in front of his forehead---and then it casts a shadow on his forehead just before the shot changes to a closeup of his face!

I doubt this error would be in the original film as shown in theatres. Maybe it's the fault of Criterion's telecine department?

You're right! Funny how I missed that even when the microphone was in front of the only visible actor's face. But you should report that in the goofs section, not in the message board.

Thanks melinda2001...

I think when I originally posted my message, that I went to submit it as a goof (but I can't remember now). After seeing your message I went to submit it, but got this warning from the system:

Please be sure you are using this category correctly.
Most visible boom microphones are the fault of the projectionist or the person making the video transfer. In general, if the boom dips somewhat into the top of the frame, it is not a reportable error. For more information, see the guide.

So, I may have not originally submitted because of this warning.

But it's funny that the mic is obviously in front of his forehead, so I'll submit it as a goof (again?) and see what happens.

Interesting. I'd not submitted a visible boom goof before so hadn't seen the warning. It'll probably be accepted just fine because IMDb has too few staff to check this stuff, but it's interesting that it's common to not be considered a goof. I like your reasoning that covering part of the actor's face makes this one more than typical.
