I Just ordered the Rebel Samurai 60's Swordplay boxset. Seven Samurai is my favourite and Hara-Kiri and other Kurosawa are right up there. I agree with you on Sword of Doom, despite being a very competent film the lack of a real ending harmed it in my opinion. Shame they didn't carry on.

Oh yes and the Samurai Trilogy is also very sensual.

Harakiri, is a Masaki Kobayashi movie, not a Kurosawa one, watch some more of Kobayashis movies, much better then Kurosawa, he's only matched by Okamoto.

reply

I know that, I meant Seven Samurai and Harakiri were my favourites, along with other Kurosawa films. I have seen other Kobayashi films and think he is amazing, but still prefer Kurosawa, Ozu and Mizoguchi.

Of course this is all opinion but I wouldn't say that Kobayashi is much better than Kurosawa. They are different types of filmmakers. Kurosawa is more a "western and artistic" type director and Kobayashi is more "dramatic and humanistic".

True.

I coulnd't agree more. This, Sword of the Beast and Sword of Doom are so well done and a pleasure to watch. I never get bored with all the different types of Samurai and Yakuza films that are popping up on DVD.

has anyone seen the betrayal?(sp)
one of the best and my person favorite, and it isnt well know or even on dvd.
the ending rivals sword of doom, and is better in my opinion.

Are The Twilight Samurai and The Hidden Blade any good?

the twilight samurai is fantastic. it starts henry sanada, and is a very moving story. This is one of the only samurai movies where I didn't want the main character to get in any sword fights because i liked him so much, and the movie was realistic enough to let me belive someonething bad could happen to him at any moment.
its a good movie

"When the last sword is drawn" IMHO is the best samurai movie ever made, together with "seven samurai"

reply

'When The last Sword is Drawn'....good stuff for sure but it doesn't even get into my top 10 samurai films. I felt it dragged a bit too much for me in several locations. Worth buying though as I do own it.

There is no Last Samurai or Kill Bill without Kurosawa's hits. Or anything without Mifune or Nakadai for that matter.

reply

Nothing tops Sanjuro, the Seven samurai or Yojimbo. Those are my top 3. The last samurai was an insult to Japanese cinema in general, not to mention Kurosawa.

I found The Last Samurai to be pretty good for what it was,a American Samurai movie. It is a very seriouse film about a important subject matter:National pride vs future and technology. The film also I thought was very respectful tword the Samurai spirit and culture.Definitly wasn't an insult to Japanese cinema or Samurai.Wasn't a perfect film by no means and definitly not worthy to be in a top ten samurai list. The film just looks at the culture from a completely new perspective on film.

"I'd say they are both humanistic, Kurosawa being a bit more sentimental (not a flaw, imo)."

I agree. 'Samurai Rebellion' really was a moving film. It was very sad when Ichi and Yogoro died and also when Isaburo died and the possibility that their story would not be told was really heartbreaking.

I agree. I actually thought it was a good film. Better and more intelligent than other American 'action epics' like 'Braveheart' and 'The Patriot'. It is based on westerners' stories in Japan so I see no problem with it or Samurai. Denying westerners the right to make films about Samurai or starring in Samurai films is unfair just as stopping an easterner making a film about the west would be unfair. I wouldn't put it in a top ten Samurai list but I could accept it more than 'Kill Bill' which doesn't feature Samurai and wasn't that good a film.

'Samurai Rebellion' (or 'Jôi-uchi: Hairyô tsuma shimatsu') should be in a 'Top Ten Samurai Films'.

I've become addicted to Samurai movies myself.

I've stumbled across some absolutely fantastic ones too - Samurai Rebellion being one of them. Just an amazing movie.

Other great ones include the obvious (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro), but also some that I had never heard of but have turned out to be great - Shogun's Samurai, Twilight Samurai, Sword of Doom - and I'm just getting started.

The Samurai Trilogy is good, with the first and third movies being VERY good.

I've got about 20 Samurai movies now, and I've only watched half of them so far. Too bad we don't have access to more titles (or, in many cases, decent DVD versions of many of these titles) - there's a lot of great stuff out there.

Looks like its been a couple years since people have posted in this thread. IDK how to make my own post here so i just replied to the latest person lol.. a buddy of mine is going to lend me this on bluray i believe. looking forward to it..

LW&C is awesome. from what i have seen. A little hyped up gore is all right once in a while; especially mixed in with chanbara. The only thing is people do not have garden hoses for veins.. lol

Sword of Doom is just so classic it hurts; then there's Seven Samurai which has to be in every bodies library. The Samurai Trilogy w/ Toshiro Mifune playing Mushashi Miyamoto is another masterpiece imho. Just started the Zatoichi films too.. (just finished 4 The Fugitive) they just to seem to keep outdoing themselves. I can't make my mind up if i like the colour over the black and white.

I recently grabbed 'Hirikiri' the original and the remake by Takashi Miike. It doesn't beat the original obviously but the remake is just as fascinating and it comes damn close.

Top 3(so far): Seven Samurai, 13 Assassins, and The Samurai Trilogy.

I am salivating with all these suggestions.

You have to watch Adauchi aka Revenge: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185842/?ref_=fn_tt_tt_16

I think it's on Netflix or you can buy the AnimEigo DVD on Amazon. One of the best I've ever seen.
