This was quite the film back in the day

It was one of the first films to show nudity and sexual activity (however brief). A cult following in it's own time.

No that brief theres a flacid penis being kissed on screen.

Don't you mean, the first mainstream film to show nudity and sexual activity? There were hot and steamy porn films beng made as far back as the 1920s. They called 'em stag films, back then. They weren't shown in any chain-owned movie houses or advertised like any other film (the way this one was) either.

I worked in a theatre where the film appeared, first-run. And the theatre was part of RKO Keith's in suburban New York, far from being any kind of porno house.

Anyway, I remember only a few people getting disgusted and walking out (mostly older women as I recall), though the staff wondered, "What were they expecting?" I mean it was the sixties!

Most people took it good-naturedly, which seemed in keeping with the attitude of the film. It didn't seem very erotic or sensual. Most audiences, especially couples, laughed at some of the sex scenes, not self-consious embarrassed laughter, either. Some of the sex scenes were kinda funny, not very steamy. Like when the van is bouncing up and down. Always a big laugh.

Glad I saw it. It was well-done and the vibe was very sincere.

I saw this in a (very provincial)school film club (16-18 year olds) plus teachers and other guests in about 1974 - we had seen quite a few Bergman films and I think the teacher who ran the club thought it was gong to be similar. I certainly don't think he had previewed the film, because there was a strangled scream of 'Oh, my!' from behind the projector at the first of the steamier scenes and it was hastily taken off. Quite the scandal for the time. A group of us did manage to see the whole film the next day, due to the sneaky intervention of the liberal minded English teacher !

I used my memory (seared on the brain, actually) of the film a couple of months in a college interview (the tutor told me later they were so impressed that I had seen it . I think they thought I was so much more worldly wise than I really was) So, thanks, Curious!

I doubt it ever played in the small town I lived in (it's hard to imagine, if you didn't live it, life before vcrs) but I remember all the agitation about it. I especially remember John and Yoko on Johnny Carson raving about the movie. That's when I knew I had to see it, but between my age and the little town I was in it just didn't happen.
