Why would Sam keep all that money?

That was a dickload of money back then, especially in a small town like Sparta. It would be around $3000-$4000 today. Why keep that much money in your house, when you're just a poor deputy? Why would he change the money for twenties, and then not just deposit the twenties immediately? Who does this?

When justifying his possession of the money, he tells Tibbs and Gillespie that he saved it up over "3 - 4 years", tossing his loose change into a container.🐭

reply

Yes, I understand that, but who the hell does that? That's just stupid. You're at the bank. You're right there! Just deposit the money, for chrissakes!

Being that the fact that he did what he did with the money is a major plot point in the Chief thinking that Sam's the guilty party, it's just how things had to go.

reply

Oh, I get that - it moves the plot along. But that doesn't mean it makes sense.

It's not stupid at all I've heard several money saving experts including Clarke Howard, suggest actually using a dollar for a 15cents item, then putting your change away. At the end of a year you find you've saved quite a lot.

It's definitely NOT STUPID! Perhaps you should try it.

Maybe he distrusted banks, but they came up with a promotion he couldn't turn down.

I once sold an old car to a guy for $1,000.00, and he paid me with one thousand dollar coins. He told me that keeping it in that form was the only way he could manage to save money.

reply

That's what Sam said in the book. Keeping the money in coins and small bills made it easier for him to save.

I don't know why they didn't explain that in the movie. Saying he got it from "matching quarters" doesn't explain why he didn't take it to the bank sooner.
