Why didn't Virgil stay with his mother?

If I recall correctly, Virgil was in town to visit his mother, who is never mentioned after the scene with Gillespie interrogating him.

So Virgil ends up staying with a local black family because there is no hotel that will take him. But if his mother is in town, why wouldn't he stay with her?
