Robert Blake = Oscar

Just watched the beautiful new Criterion bluray. How I had never seen it before, I don't know. What an amazing work of filmmaking on all levels. I see that it was nominated four times.

I am baffled at that Robert Blake wasn't nominated! Was is because they didn't know if he was lead or supporting? For me he was clearly the cold tragic heart of the movie. It just have been w competive year for him to be overlooked.

Does anyone have any idea why he wasn't nominated?

Scott Wilson and Blake both should have been nominated that year.

It was tough to get nominated that year. All the best actor nominees were from all-time classic films. Sometimes the lack of a nomination doesn't hurt. We probably remember Blake's performance better than some of the nominees over the years. Remember that in any given year or all the years, the list of filmmakers that didn't get nominated is often more memorable than the list that did.
