Why is he green?

Can someone shed light on why the character of Ramiro is coloured bright green like Kermit the Frog?
The explanation within the film is that he has an illness that discoloured his skin which in turn allows his brother to hire him without recognising him and assume that he is West Indian (specifically Creole!!)
I realise this is a semi-comedy and produced mainly for 60's German cinema consumption but even so...it's a staggeringly jaw dropping feature of a really fun little movie.
I mean...come on...he's green for heavens sake!!!

That was the thing which bothered me the most about this film too, and at first I wondered why no-one was mentioning his green skin colour. Then I remembered something I've heard many years ago, when I was a small child I heard someone talk about Indians being red, Asians yellow, Africans black, Europeans white and some others (it might have been Creoles, as it was certainly a word I've never heard before and back then I most certainly didn't know what that term) being green. Not only is this all a load of rubbish, but even back then I was very puzzled about that categorizations and I wondered where those "green" people where living as I've never seen one of them.

I don't know who came up with all that nonsense, and to make someone literally green and act as if this would be normal for a Creole from the West Indies is absolutely ridiculous and I wonder if anybody back then in Europe was really so naïve to believe that.
