Great score...

Goldsmith's score is way ahead of its time. It could have been written yesterday...and it does a great job of being quiet and understated most of the time, while still helping to move the narrative along. Just wonderful!

Having never seen this movie before tonight, I awoke to my TiVo switching on after falling asleep on the couch early on tonight. I immediately awoke to the score drifting through my mind... I instantly recognized the unmistakable sound and swell... it had to be Goldsmith and sure enough, it was. I agree that it is understated, but to me, that was Jerry's finest attribute... his subtle underlying themes running throughout films providing that underlying tension that could explode at the precise necessary moments then evolve into sentimental emoting sequences... "Alien" (an amazing must-own score), "Planet Of The Apes" or "Tora! Tora! Tora!' are perfect examples of that underlying tension. It is an amazing score for a western and I believe one of Jerry's ten best and that is saying something. Now, I have to search out places to add this to my ever-expanding Goldsmith CD/LP collection. Jerry, Bernard, Miklos, John, Hans, James, Alfred and Dimitri are some of my fave film composers... finding all of their music is a chore, but one that is very rewarding once found.

I just got through listening to this score(Intrada release)for the umpteenth time.... what a wonderful score!!! The last track ("A Friendly Lie") is both gorgeous and powerful! Goldsmith is SORELY MISSED!

Yes, for several reasons it's too bad the film didn't make a bigger splash at the box office, and one reason it's unfortunate is that the score, like the movie itself, is overlooked, but it's a great one.
