Costumes and jewelry and...

The costumes and jewelry were spectacular, as was Merle Oberon! She was such a beauty and had such class. And the diamonds had to be real. I wish we had actresses like her nowadays...but, no one can compare, in my humble opinion...

I'm going to have to go watch "Wuthering Heights" now...

Ahh...I missed what Mr. Osborne said at the beginning, but you know, I figured it was her own, and even said as much to my husband. Wow! I can't even imagine having jewels like that! :) I think just looking at her, her style, clothing and jewels were the best parts of the movie! What a star!! :D She is the definition of what a movie star was all about! Class!

Be well :)

I also loved the purple outfit, matching hat, and the large kind of squared sunglasses. So chic.

Yes, she reminded me of Audrey Hepburn's mother in that outfit.

But that enormous piled-high hair and thick, pseudo-Asian eye-liner was rather unflattering.

Sorry for the late reply. MO actually was Asian, born in India, although she tried for years, well actually all her life to cover up the fact, sadly. Claimed to be Australian, born in our southern most state, Tasmania. But the myth was uncovered after her death. She was a beautiful looking woman. Real 'film star' in that sense of the word. Rod Taylor, her co-star and not a bad looker himself, actually was an Aussie.

The Academy Award(s) winning Edith Head designed the gowns, Merle Oberon supplied her own jewels.

Oberon wore a spectacular emerald and diamond necklace that just shimmered with fire in the Technicolor film "The Divorce of Lady X" (1938). (The strapless black dress she had on wasn't bad, either!)

Here is a screenshot http://www.dvdclassik.com/upload/images/galeries/disque-le-divorce-de-lady-x10.png - but alas, that image doesn't do the necklace justice.

I have also come acrosss this book:

‘Twentieth Century Jewelry & The Icons of Style’ by Stefano Papi and Alexandra Rhodes
http://www.jewelsdujour.com/2013/10/20th-century-jewelry-the-icons-of-style/
It also features Oberon wearing that necklace, but also a full color picture of what appears to be the same necklace.
