What's so good about it?

For Halloween 2006, I watched this movie along with a few other horror classics, and I have to say that I don't get it... This movie gets nothing but praise, and scores an incredible 8.7 with 114 votes (at the time of writing). But what's special about it?

I found it rather dull, to be honest. Certainly not scary! Predictable, run-of-the-mill story, and alot of the scenes seemed only motivated by the possibility of parading (presumably) teenage girls in their underwear...

What am I missing here? Am I too "hardened", and have higher than average expectations? Am I too young to fully appreciate a vintage horrorflick of this kind? Someone please explain it to me, because I simply just don't get it!

4/10

As a side note, I also watched The Changeling (http://imdb.com/title/tt0080516/), starring George C. Scott. Now THAT's a proper scary movie! No blood, no gore, just plenty of genuine spookiness! Quite the adrenaline rush. Highly recommended.

because is the "Citizen Kane" of Mexican Horror Films! when the entire mexican horror film industry is ruled by Santo, Blue Demon (and other mexican wrestlers) fighting agains zombies, Dracula, and mad doctors... this film came without zombies, mad doctors and outstanding special effects... only with a story made by the mexican Alfred Hitchcock (no, i'm not kidding) carlos Enrique Taboada, Guillermo del Toro's mentor, average performances with the exception of Marga Lopez & Maricruz Oliver, and a really good photography (once again... in the mexican standars), that why almost 40 years later it's considered the masterpiece of the mexican horror films.

I've seen it too and it's not scary at all but you have to understand back then it was... and I agree with the part that it was all Santo and Blue Demon so it was pretty original for its time and even though I wouldn't watch as a part of some horror marathon kind of thing I still think it's good and I would watch it if they had it on television

Whats wrong with Santo and Blue demon ?? !!!

You're right about the photography!
I was amazed (and pleased) to see this kind of camerawork for a movie made almost 50 years ago.
Only for this I added +2 points to my score.
Too bad that the acting didn't keep up with the movie.

Whats wrong with young girls in their underwear? Where do I sign ?? !!!

It's a mid 60's film so nudity and blood are MIA, but this film has a very unique atmosphere and style. I think it's very creepy but would have loved this even more if I saw it back when I was a kid. The plot has become so cliched by 2008 you have to try and watch the film and keep in mind the period it was made in. It's a minor classic and certainly one of the best Mexiacn thrillers.

Today audiences are too accustomed to see gory, mindless, action packed films. Movies as atmospheric and slow-paced as "Hasta el viento tiene miedo" seems have no room nowadays.
However I don't think the answer is to follow the trend. IMO Guillermo del Toro have shown everybody that speeding-up the pace just a little bit (without reaching the ludicrous excesses of Hollywood and some asian flicks), and keeping the best from the horror classics, you can have the best from both worlds: a critically acclaimed movie and a box office hit at the same time.
It's not easy, but again, GDT have shown us that it's possible.

Norma Lazareno's cleavage! Just kidding. She was very good as Kitty in Hasta El Viento Tiene Miedo(1968).

And what about 7 years after you watched it for the first time? I think it's not exactly a horror movie, but a great atmospheric thriller flick. Besides, the first half of the film it's really funny, but may you can't get it if you don't speak spanish.
By the way... the teenage girls in underwear were good. It's too sugestive without explicit nudes.

Javikiller I agree with you about it being an atmospheric thriller! I just saw it again this week, ( haven't seen it since I was a child ) at night while it was raining, and it gave me the creeps, something that many ghost movies or even shows do to me still to this day, they take me into their atmosphere. I've seen many gory, campy, Hollywood, Spaniard, Mexican, Asian, old and new, etc, you name it, ive probably seen it, and nothing shocks me or scares but, but still entertains, but these ghost ones, that are just simply done I guess are the ones that are pretty memorable. Love this movie.
