Coffee in the saucer

I absolutely love this movie. Have since I was a kid of 10 years old.

I just wonder why John Lawless (the prospective butler) pours a small amount of coffee in his saucer at the first of the movie? I spill mine all the time when I use a saucer but that is an accident not on purpose.

I've heard different people talk about the habit, but they each gave different reasons. One was for cooling purposes, and one talked about controlling the sweetening process easier that way. I'd love to know the "real" answer!

Cooling would be the reason for me...it obviously will cool quickly in a saucer and by then, the coffee in the cup will be a bit cooler.

Some think Seventysevenyearoldguy is senile, so this is one of my last posts under that screenname.

I was wondering about that myself. It seemed like a strange detail to include in the movie, I assumed it had something to do with the character's Irish background.

Its the first time I've ever seen it in a movie. Funnily enough I do remember an old friend of the family doing it when I was young. Pretty sure its an Irish thing.
