Actually, in the opening scene, Clint Eastwood looks like Rowdy Yates, the character he played in Rawhide. Literally, Rowdy Yates is killed off.
Clint Eastwood has finished with Rowdy Yates.
When resurrected, Clint Eastwood is an other man, tougher, more like the man with no name character.
So, Hang'Em High can be seen as the transition between the naive Rowdy Yates and Clint Eastwood's bad ass characters.
