Scary stuff. I saw on a documentary that the cure (for men anyway) was to stick a tube up the old twinkie and dose the working parts with a mercury solution. Not sure how effective that was..
Edit: Mercury was NOT a cure. Just relieved symptoms. There apparently was a saying back then: "one night with Venus, a lifetime with Mercury". Great MIch, now I'm Googling venereal disease in the Civil War. Fun stuff if my computer ever gets confiscated!!
