Peter Gunn turns into a total p***y when . . .

. . . Laura Devon comes by his house while Sherry Jackson is upstairs in his bedroom. The smooth, charming, quick-with-a-quip man becomes a frightened, pleading little boy.

For those who've seen the TV series, was this in any way in keeping with the character, or is this another example of how the movie took a mis-step?

I'm not an expert but I've seen a handful of episodes of the show and I think it's mostly in keeping with its occasional trips into farce/slapstick territory (remember this is Blake Edwards we're talking about). Stephens did seem to be playing for laughs a little broader than he would in the series, though. If I recall, the scene in question played out on the series as well, so a direct comparison between the two versions of the character is theoretically possible.

What's the Spanish for drunken bum?
