Favorite Vignette?

Which guest star vignette was your favorite in the film? Mine was definitely Carl Reiner as the movie star who goes to outrageous lengths to have an extra marital affair without being caught but to no avail.

kenoltingTerry Thomas and the WONDERFUL Jayne Mansfield ! They were screamingly funy !

reply

Yeah, that one was funny too...is Terry-Thomas still alive?

reply

No, Terry is dead. My favorite is the Joey Bishop "Deny, Deny" vignette, HILARIOUS! I think O.J. Simpson stole this idea!

reply

I concur. Even though his wife (Millie on the Dick van Dyke show) caught him in bed with another woman, Joey denied everything. His wife starts doubting what she saw and then finally throws in the towel and cooks him diner.

And the banter between Robert Morse and Walter Matthau
"But what if ..."
"Deny, deny, deny"

Deny, deny, deny!

You have to be damned good to convince somebody that they didn't see what you ALL know they did. That was brilliant and just too funny.

"Burn, Hollywood, Burn!"- from the incomparable album "Fear of a Black Planet" by Public Enemy.

reply

Deny, deny, deny was always my favorite as well.

In the kingdom of the blind, you're the village idiot.

The Terry Thomas/Jane Mansfield episode had the best line in the whole movie. I mean, they're having an illicit affair and everything but, when they can't find her bra, Thomas asks her if she's sure she wore one, to which Mansfield replies, "Of course I did. What kind of girl do you think I am?"

reply

No the funny line was when Mansfield says that when his wife finds it she will just think it is hers and Terry Thomas says with a grimace, "No she won't."

My favorite vignette is the one with Lucille Ball and Art Carney. That one seems so underrated. Am I the only one here who liked it? It comes near the beginning and is short (like all of them) but I just love it when Carney makes fun of her cooking and she gets mad and screams. Lucy still looked very attractive in this movie even though she was 56 years old at the time. I read something about this movie in a book about Lucy where the author says something like 'she is 56 years old and truly shows her age (in the movie).' So what, she is still a gorgeous woman. Anyway, that's my favorite, but I have so many (Wally Cox making out with the other women while his wife is right across from him, Hal March losing his heavily perfumed coat out the window of the taxi, Jayne Mansfield and Terry-Thomas looking for her missing bra and of course, Joey Bishop deny, deny, denying he was ever in bed with another girl while his wife looks on in amazement). A great movie with great performances. I loved it.

How about Jack Benny pretending he's been wiped out financially so that his girlfriend will dump HIM? Benny was just plain brilliant at underplaying.

reply

My favorite is the Lucille Ball - Art Carney one.

reply

OH GOD, YOU ALL ARE RIGHT, they were ALL brilliant. I can't choose I loved them all. Why can't they make a movie like this anymore?

reply

Maybe not exactly a vignette, but the Romanoff's restaurant scene with Sid Caesar (both the real scene and then Morse telling Matthau what the poor schmuck should have done). Sid Caesar was another natural comedian of that era. I just loved him in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

reply

The one with Terry-Thomas & Mansfield.

When she says maybe his wife will think the bra will be hers, and he simply says, "Don't be ridiculous."

"So what else is on your mind besides 100 proof women, 90 proof whiskey, and 14 karat gold?"

reply

Actually my favorite scenes are when Matthau comes home to his wife. He keeps coming up with reasons to cheat on his wife yet "Ruth" keeps proving on and on what a wonderful wife and mother she really is. He tries to pick a fight with her on the amount of money she spent on a gourmet meal she's preparing when she tells him the fancy french meal she is making is just merely a few potatoes, a pound of sausage, and a couple of eggs.

Foiled, he states that that was not a proper meal to give to a child. She comes back with their daughter had already eaten and she had cauliflower, creamed spinach, and lamb chops.

So there!!!!

This is one of my favorite movies and even though it is dated, I've enjoyed it better than most of the movies that are being shown today.

It's "Deny! Deny! Deny!"

It clearly inspired Bill Clinton!

I love Phil Silvers so naturally I like his bit but the Terry Thomas/Jayne Masfield bit is probably the funniest.

I've only seen this once so far, but right now, I'm still grinning at the lost bra vignette.

Also the one with the guy who left his shoes behind, and the one where the guy denies having an affair...

Ha ha, this movie is so funny!!!!!!

During the 'trip around the world' vignette, there was a bi-plane in Egypt to assist in part of the diversion. On the underside of the wing, you can see the letter N which is the American call letter. SU is Egyptian.
