The issue is John is 18 years older than Joey

That wasn't even mentioned. I'm not saying that you can't marry someone 18 years older and be happy but it is yet another possible source of conflict going into the marriage. That makes 3 issues, dealing with society reaction to them, knowing each other only 10 days, and an 18 year age difference.

that's just what i thought! any parent would go a little crazy at the thought of their daughter marrying someone so much older then her.... but the fact that they haven't even known each other for 2 weeks!..... man, i'd be pretty dumbstruck.

when i was watching the film (first time- last night) i thought "WTF?!" when she announces "and i only met him 10 days ago"
i think they should've altered that for the movie. or not mention it at all.

it just seems ridiculous!

i knew shortly after meeting my husband that he would be my lifelong mate, but we still waited a year. Investment in discovery time is necessary.

If you 'know', then you shouldn't need 'discovery time'; if you don't, then you do.

I agree.

I knew my husband was the one on the night I met him. Four days later he announced that he would leave everything (town, job, friends) to start anew with me. We've loved each other for 25 years.

Race is the biggest factor the rest they can deal with.

i feel like back then age differences weren't as much of a big deal as they are now. after all, throughout much of human history, marriages between teenage girls and older, sometimes downright OLD men were common, especially to ensure dynasties, etc. there are still child brides today.
personally, i think a big age difference would be weird. but my mom and step-dad have a 15-year age difference and they're two peas in a pod.

Just like the others, it's all for them to work out, though.

in Funny Face mr Fred Astaire was 30 years older than Haudrey Hepburn. And looked 50 years older. THAT was shivering...

Oddly enough, back in '67 when this movie was made, the hastiness of their wedding and the age gap between them (the two biggest issues BY FAR) were nothing compared to the interracial marriage. Certainly, any rational person would jump first with the age gap or their hastiness, but I guess that's the point of the movie, the society cared way more about the skin color than more substantial issues.

Actually, it isn't. Your inability to subtract is.

Perhaps the OP was referring to Sidney Poitier's actual age, rather than the character he was playing.
