Funny moment when I saw this film in '72

A high school friend and I went to a double feature at the old El Rey theatre in Walnut Creek, California, mainly to see "Superfly." "Day of Anger" came first on the bill and the audience was silent, caught up in the melodrama until the scene where Talby goes into an ultra-shabby Mexican bar (as I recall, the bar was depicted as a plank laid across a couple of boulders).

He slammed his fist on the bar and demanded: "Get me Wild Jack!"

After a beat, some guy from the rear of the theatre yelled out "Wild JACK? Wild JACK?" as if it was the far too stereotypical spaghetti western villian name that it was. From that moment, nearly the entire audience began yucking it up at all the corny parts, though the couple next to us kept urging everyone to shut up.

It was such a fun night at the movies, my buddy and I thought about going back and recreating the incredulous "Wild JACK?" shout but ultimately figured it was like one of those unreproduceable moments that just worked with that particular audience.
