Thing that made me laugh: the guillotine

I had to laugh every time they showed that guillotine just standing out there on the edge of town. Nice to know the town was furnished with its own permanent "community capital punishment device"!

This wasnt actually uncommon. A guillotine or hanger would often be standing around all the time even when not used. In fact, most of the time it was set up in the middle of the town, to remind peasants of possible punishment for misbehaving.

Really ... not uncommon? Can you cite on historic reference that talks about a guillotine as a permanent fixture in a city or town, let alone one that was common, or not uncommon?

reply

One example can be found in the film "Frankenstein Created Woman" from 1967, in which they show a town with a guillotine permanently in place. It's on the edge of town, but within the city limits.

They need to bring that form of execution back for people on death row. So much more interesting than a lethal injection.

Burn, witch! Burn, witch! Burn! Burn! Burn!

I smell a new reality show....

reply

Well, as others have said perhaps not so much that it was there.. but with the blade already at the top, and not secured in anyway.. I mean, health and safety or what? You could have someones head off with it left like that...

few visible scars

Yes, exactly... it's just the way the thing was sitting out there all ready to go, with the blade in place and everything. No safeguards, no barriers to keep kids or other people from goofing around on the thing. Just seemed amusingly odd to see a device like that sitting out in the open, unattended!

reply

What about it rusting or rotting in the elements?

reply

True. It would require constant maintenance for it to be in working order. The way it was depicted in the movie, it seemed like it just sat out there, un-tended and exposed to the elements.

Don't mess with me, man! I know karate, judo, ju-jitsu..... and several other Japanese words.

reply

I laughed at the fact that the guillotine was flat in some shots and pointed in others.

reply

I thought the same and threre were street signs there.

reply

Might not be a bad idea to bring this back!

reply

Would be nice to have around these days to remind politicians and billionaires there are consequences for bad behavior.
