Saw it on TCM recently i missed what happened to the money at the store

It was on till 3:30 am & somehow I missed what they did with the money they got at the dept. store can someone here please enlighten me?

It was dropped into Gimbels' outgoing mail, addressed to the St. Dismas Thrift Shoppe.

Was the thrift shop just a front where they brought the stolen goods and sold but kept the money? That was my understanding.
