If this is your favorite movie...

What are some of your other favorites?

This will always be my favorite movie due to the absolutely breathtaking atmosphere - those unbelievable images! That dazzling score! That dreamlike feel! So, after becoming fed up with searching for reccomendations of movies as similar to this as I can find (the closest I have come up with is Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter, which is a great movie, but certainly not in the same league as FVK), I ask my fellow FVK fans:

If you love this movie for the same reasons I do, what other films, if any, make you feel like FVK does?

Fearless Vampire Killers is one of my all time favorite films and probably my all time favorite vampire film. I would suggest the original Nosferatu and the 1979 Werner Herzog remake, they may be a bit of a bore to most people but both are artful vampire classics. I also love "Daughters of Darkness" and "Vampires" two 70's female vampire flicks, depending on your sensibilities these two may be a bit risque as they are of the lesbian vampire genre. As far as non vampire movies i would suggest "The Wickerman" or "Blood on Satan's Claw". Also "Blood for Dracula" aka "Andy Warhol's Dracula" is classic and even features Roman Polanski in a brief cameo role.
P.S. I would also suggest the Italian Black Sabbath which is an anthology of 3 stories one of which is a vampire tale called the "Wardulak" with Boris Karloff, it's a great creepy little tale set in eastern Europe. Very good!

I could suggest Dario Argento's Suspiria. Totally different genre but check it out. Let me know if it rings you right.

Suspiria was one of the scariest movies I had seen as a kid. It looks a bit silly in parts to me now. My favorite actor in this is Aida Vali. She's great in this.

I do love this film AND Captain Kronos- mostly because of their alternate and folklore based takes on the vampire myth. It has the feel of a fairytale. The scene that cemented this film on my BEST list comes early- when the sleigh is rushing through the snowbanked lanes and the wolves are in pursuit...

I am not sure I can name any film that captures the same feelings as this film...
"Lemora" is the only other film that comes to mind.

From Polanski, Dance Of The Vampires, Rosemary's Baby, Repulsion and Cul-De-Sac are my very favorites.

In the horror genre, Horror Of Dracula, Vampyr (Dreyer), Psycho (Hitchcock's original ofcourse, with Bernard Herrmann's dazzling score) and The Gorgon.

Citizen Kane also has a wonderful Bernard Herrmann score, especially the sleigh ride scene. And (Hitchcock's) Vertigo is dreamlike, with the most beautiful Herrmann music ever.

But apart from those... There's no film like Dance Of The Vampires!

Some of its actors I love in other movies:
- Jack MacGowran in The Exorcist, Cul-De-Sac, and the Avengers' episode The Winged Avenger (1967)
- Alfie Bass in several English films and in Dick Turpin (TV)
- Ferdy Mayne in Barry Lyndon, Fedora, Wallenberg and Pirates
- Sharon Tate (ofcourse,) in Eye Of The Devil and Don't Make Waves
- Terry Downes in A Study In Terror

And Krzysztof Komeda's great music can also be heard in (mostly,) other Polanski films, such as Noz W Wodzie (Knife In The Water, long before they made Dead Calm), Cul-De-Sac and Rosemary's Baby. All his scores are hauntingly good!

I've like Polanski's work. He handles horror well. In this film, although not THAT horrifying, he uses excellent atmosphere, mostly set up by the visuals. Great sets and evocative music are used to great effect.

I always couldn't remember where I had seen Jack MacGowran in other films. I was surprised to find out he played Burke in The Exorcist...and I DO remember that Avengers episode.

Back to my original comment: a good satire that sticks to the vampire mythology.

I think John Carpinter's "Vampires" is fantastic

Great advice from Richard III.
This is a good page for great movies, I have recentley started buying more Polanski films as I love FVK and love Polanski's directing , I brought Rosemary's baby which I thought was brillant, I watched Repulsion last night which I also thought was good quite scary too, I have left to watch Chinatown and The Pianist.
As said before the soundtrack by Krzysztof Komeda is well worth buying for FVK when I play it in the car it is like I am watching the film you can just picture the scenes.
The wickerman was mentioned aswell the original 1973 version is a classic another good soundtrack too.

I agree that what makes this movie special are the images and the atmosphere. I've never seen a movie that surpasses this one on those points, however I've seen a few that came close (in my opinion). They are: Brides of Dracula, Where Eagles Dare and John Carpenters The Thing.

Russian fantasy films have the same atmosphere and feel of this movie. I'd check out Maria The Wonderful Weaver, Sampo, Jack Frost (Russian), and Sinbad (Russian), Vasilissa The Beautiful, and other films by Aleksandr Rou

I'd recommend Neal Jordan's 1984 film The Company of Wolves. Dreamlike atmosphere, shot and acted like a subversive fairytale. And lycanthropy, like vampirism in Fearless Vampire Killers, is treated as a sort of analogue to sexual desire. A rare find!

reply

Yes, I too rate this as one of my favourite movies of all time. Totally agree with you about the stunning atmosphere and memorable musical score.

Another movie which springs to mind as having similar memorable qualities, like a breathtaking atmosphere and dazzling score, was THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY. This was truly my all time favourite Western. There are movies and there are movies, and these films were certainly unforgettable classics of their individual genres!
