The New DVD...

I really want to sit down and watch this, and I really love the first ten minutes, but it is SO DAMN AGGRAVATING to sit and watch that AWFUL pan-and-scan DVD. It's horrid! You would think that since they gave us a beautiful widescreen version of HOLY MOUNTAIN and a wonderfully restored EL TOPO (Even if it is full-screen) that they could've done better with this one. Shame...

I wholeheartedly agree. The case says that it's a widescreen transfer, and I even was able to find a weird setting on my DVD player in the "setup" mode (not the settings area from the dvd menu, this was the setup button on my remote) which allowed me to toggle from "pan & scan" to "widescreen" -- i was thrilled to find this -- but it did nothing to stop the pan & scan of the film. Really strange decision on the production company's behalf.... what were they thinking?

It's either in wide-screen or pan-and-scan, no dvd player feature can change this. It can simulate a 4X3 screen with a 16:9 image or vice versa, either by stretching or cropping.

Yeah it's a pity that his movie didn't receive the same quality treatment than "La cravate", "El topo" or "The Holy Mountain". But at least we got some good extras: the audiocommentary it's quite useful to understand what on earth is Jodorowsky trying to say in some scenes, besides Jodorowsky's anecdotes are really hilarious at times.
The other major extra, "La constellation Jodorowsky", is not the best docu ever but at least shows you one facet of him: "Alejandro and the psicomagic".

I don't think it's pan scan, though it does look like it and the contrast is extremely high, though that may be how the film looks. The prolem is it looks like it was a pal transfer.
