A few questions (SPOILERS)

I just watched this movie and have been mulling it over in my mind. I've come up with a few questions.

1. Did David Nivens character know for sure that he would have to die when he went back? It seemed like he spent a lot of time beforehand praying and other things, so I wasn't sure if he got the chance to fix things first or went back just to be sacrificed.

2. Why was Deborah Kerr locked up in her room while the rest of the family, including children went to the ceremony? I'm assuming it's because they knew she would try to stop it?

3. I wonder if David Niven would have ever told his wife what was going to happen. Would he just have never come home and then it would be reported he died in a "hunting accident?"

4. Where was he shot with the arrow? Through the chest or head? I would hope it would be the head so there would be less suffering.

I don’t know if the commentator even looks at this board.

1). Yes, Philippe knew he was going to die. He just needed to go through ceremonies to purify himself before the sacrifice.

2). Yes, She was locked up so that she wouldn’t interfere or possibly change Phillip’s mind.

3). That was the plan. But he never thought his wife would appear along with his children. The boy was in danger because he heard the call for sacrifice too.

4). Most likely the heart.
