Truth Really is Stranger Than Fiction

When I watched this film I had no idea it was based on a real story. The premise of a lieutenant running off with a tightrope walker and then deciding there was nothing to do but kill themselves when they ran out of money seemed like pure kitsch. But apparently there really was an Elvira Madigan and a Sixten Sparre, and quite a romantic cult has developed around them in Europe.
