DVD

I bought the dvd of "Elvira Madigan" recently, apparently a Korean issue, I'm not sure if it's basically one of the 'legal bootlegs' or not. It's pretty good quality (mono of course), I expected it to be mediocre so I'm happy with it, but...
Why hasn't this film been given a properly remastered, authorized dvd release? I think this film would be perfect for the Criterion Collection. And since both of the stars are still with us I'd enjoy their commentary. Any word on this classic seeing a serious dvd release?

I agree. I've never even SEEN it and I want to. I'd get it right away if Criterion released it. I've heard the music and cinematography are breath-taking. If Criterion can release "Fiend Without A Face" they can do this one too.

There is a dvd available. It's good quality and I have no complaints with it, but of course we'd all love to see Criterion do it. The all-regions dvd that I bought about 3 years ago is here:

Thanks Sean:) Still it WOULD be great if Criterion does it. Their transfers are just stunning.

There was an American DVD release I believe, only it wasn't Criterion unfortunately. The American release is wildly expensive now, I have seen some sellers posting it between eighty to one hundred and twenty dollars! You can still get the import DVD rather cheap at E-Bay. I seen the film recently for the first time on "You Tube". A user has it uploaded there, and I absolutely fell in love with it, so I was thinking about picking up the import DVD at E-Bay, but wasn't certain what the quality would be like. Thanks to Sean for the review! If it's decent I'll grab it up!

I have a question for Sean--is it worth buying on DVD? When I saw it ages ago on TV it was horribly dubbed and the print was so washed out it looked like the film was in black and white!

reply

Preppy- I am not sure if Sean is around anymore, so I will try to help out. I just recently purchased the DVD from E-Bay. I believe that it is the Korean import that Sean spoke of purchasing and in his original post he seemed happy with the quality. I have yet to watch it, it just arrived a day ago, but once I do I will leave a review here.

Thanks dragon:) I have the info on how to buy it but I want to make sure it's worth it.

Preppy- Just watched it tonight and it's a great copy. Clear picture, nice color, and your choice of subtitles: English, Korean or none. It isn't dubbed. An excellent buy, as I picked it up at E-Bay for about six dollars. Highly recommended.
