Toulouse-Lautrec?

I seem to recall that, in the movie, Toulouse-Lautrec sketched Elvira.
Now I cannot find any reference to this. Did it really happen? or was it added because they were contemporaries. Is the sketch in the movie a fake? Anyone know about this?

They don't make it clear that it is Toulouse-Lautrec. All that Elvira says is that a cripple in Paris sketched her. I don't think it really happened. It was just used to heighten the tragedy at the end. That's just my guess though.

I also doubt it's based on an actual event, but there is a further clue in the film – when Elvira takes the painting to be pawned, she shows the pawn shop owner the signature, T.L.

Supposedly it IS based on a real incident that happened. The movies just made it a big romance.
