If remade.. who would you cast

Judging by the massive amounts of remakes it's only a matter of time. Though there's not a huge market for westerns who would you like to see in a remake of this movie. If i had to chose i'de go with.

Russell Crowe- J.P
Chris Pine- Mississippi
Kevin Costner- Cole Thorton
Ed Harris- Bart Jason (would be more menacing and villianous)
Juaquin Pheonix- McCloud (much younger than costner could build on that relationship)
Tom Skerrit- Bull (probably wouldn't be as eccentric as the original)
Ashley Greene- Joey Mconald
Andie McDowell- Maudie

I'm liking your list there... I've always thought if I make it into the movie industry I'd love to take a spin on this film... it's hands down my favorite western, period. I've watched it dozens of times since I was little... I'd very much like to read the book The Stars In Their Courses which the movie is loosely based on and maybe incorporate more elements from the source, if I ever had the opportunity to remake it.

But anyways, here's my list:

Jeffrey Dean Morgan - J.P. (Has that gruff charm and could play a hero -> turned drunk -> turned hero again well)

Chris Pine - Mississippi (Love your pick! He's proven himself as a very talented and witty actor. He fits perfectly and I'm surprised I hadn't considered him before.)

Cole's tougher for me to pick... I think Costner's just barely over the age limit I'd have, I know The Duke was older when he made this, but I was thinking late 40's borderline 50 for the role. It would take some serious weighing of options to ultimately decide.

James Caan - Bart Jason (It would be interesting for him to play the reversal of his character from the original.)

Karl Urban - Nelse McCloud (I'm a big fan of Karl, he has an awesome range and he could be threatening as hell with a big scar down his face.)

Morgan Freeman - Bull (Like you said wouldn't be as eccentric, still a smart ass though. Definitely would have some bugle tootin'.)

Lake Bell - Joey MacDonald (She fits well with Pine as Mississippi, as she's the same age. She could definitely play a strong female character well.)

Diane Lane - Maudie (Haven't put much thought into who I'd pick for Maudie... but, I think Diane Lane is the right age and still as beautiful as ever... so at the moment she'd be my pick.)

Things happen off camera. We never see characters use the toilet, but we can assume they did.

J.P. - Viggo Mortenson
Cole Thornton - Bruce Willis
Mississippi - Scott Caan
Bart Jason - Tom Wilkinson
Nelse McCloud - Willem Dafoe
Bull - Adam Baldwin
Joey McDonald - Summer Glau
Maudie - Cate Blanchett

I had the hardest time deciding who I would pick for J.P. Viggo was actually my first choice for Cole Thornton, and I realized that he really isn't charismatic enough, so that's how that got there.

Bruce Willis might be too old, but he could do the character well, and he's the same age as Willem Dafoe, which would work well.

I like Chris Pine for this role also, but my first choice was Joseph Gordon-Leavitt. Then I remembered how similar Scott Caan's Danny Williams acts to James Caan's Mississippi. Plus it would cool to see father and son play the same role.

Tom Wilkinson always does a great villain, as evidenced by Batman Begins and The Patriot. I can't really take Ed Harris as a villain without thinking of National Treasure 2. James Caan would be cool, but not if Scott Caan is in this picture. One or the other.

Willem Defoe can be a scary villain. He's quietly tough enough for the role, but the original actor reminded me of him.

Adam Baldwin might actually be too young but if he were to mix John Casey's age and ethics with Jayne Cobb's mannerisms I think it would turn out great.

Summer Glau is hot, and she has and roles where she handles guns.

Cate Blanchett would do this role quite well.

Thank you. It's what these insufferable "Remake" threads deserve.

What a shame. Michael Clarke Duncan didn't live long enough to participate in this "dream" remake. How about . . . Shia LaBoeuf as Joey?

I disagree with what you are saying, but I will fight to your death for your right to say it;-)

I'm with you. This is a classic, one of the best and funniest movies ever. No one could do justice to a remake.

I agree, in my opinion you don't remake a John Wayne movie. That's probably why the remake of True Grit didn't do very well.

reply

Darn right! Remaking a John Wayne movie is pure blasphemy. That True Grit abomination was awful. If they remade Eldorado, I promise you I'd not subject myself to what they would do with it. There is NOBODY in Hollywood who can replace John Wayne and there never will be. Also nobody understands westerns anymore. They would mess Eldorado up so bad that it would be painful to watch. I can see all the characters turned into wooden, sullen, unspeaking tough guys with the personality of a zombie and they would dress them in long black coats and give them shoulder length hair.

The mere fact that they are trying to remake a lot of the older movies proves that there is no talent in Hollywood currently. They can't come up with any new ideas on their own.

AMEN to that.

I typically don't mind remakes, it never detracts from the original. I hate to admit I was actually looking forward to the True Grit remake due to the cast. Turns out the movie was crap and the only redeeming quality was the girl, an unknown.

"El Dorado" was already a remake. It's been done enough. What is needed is something original.
