Christopher George is great in this

He steals the show the scenes with him and Wayne are the best. Way better bad guy then the boring ed asner. I just watched the 2 disc dvd of this and its a shame nobody talks about him. Credit is definitely due

Just caught the movie again last night and came here to say the same thing. Christopher George was a really excellent actor, I once read that John Wayne felt the same way. George got to work with him in at least two other movies, The Train Robbers and Chisum and George was really a busy actor during the late 60's and 70's. It's such a shame he had to pass away so young in the early 80's. There's no telling how much more quality work he might had done if he had lived longer.

I didn't find Asner to be boring, but George's McCleod really stole the show. He the bad guy that you liked, respected, and even felt a little bit sorry for at the end.

We know that he didn't deserve any better, but it's hard not to feel bad for him not getting killed the way he did, instead of being allowed to fight a proper duel, after showing a sense of fair play on his end.

I love that introduction where he's talking about the fastest guns. "One of them's dead, the other's me."

I was hoping that at the end he, Johne Wayne and Robert Mitchum would have become friends. They seemed to have alot in common. I did like Ed Asner in it though. Fantastic movie.

reply

Interesting thought, that would have been fun to see.

George is great.

Creasy: Okay, my friend. It's off to the next life for you. I guarantee you, you won't be lonely..

reply

"Faith can move mountains, but it can't beat a faster gun"

I love the way he says that line.

reply

ABSOLUTELY.

reply

I agree you really have to love George's character in this. Professional courtesy.....love it.

As mentioned above he became great friends with the Duke, who ensured he was cast in further films with him. I think Wayne was impressed with the fact that George had seen him as an influential childhood hero, who had influenced him into joining the Marines, where he had a decorated and event-filler career, prior to acting.🐭

reply

Actually, you got the line wrong. The correct line is "Faith can move mountains, but it can't beat a faster DRAW".

reply

AAAHHHHH You are right! I misquoted a line from Eldorado..........can't believe I've slipped so low. I'm ashamed of myself for obviously letting my priorities slip! Thank you Sir for correcting me. :)

There's nothing boring about Ed Asner. He just didn't have much of a part to work with.

reply

He's no good without Mary Tyler Moore!

reply

He reminds me a lot of John Ireland. Anybody else think so?

reply

He did a good job in the role, but I found the role to be a bit boring. A paper tiger. A lot of talk about how tough and fast he is, but you never really see him do anything besides talk and get shot.

reply

He was a better villain than Ed Asner. Between this and Rat Patrol, he had leading man potential.
